RSS Explanation

What is RSS?

RSS (Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication) feeds provide a handy way to be notified of all new information posted on your favourite sites without having to visit each one individually. For example, you can get a free RSS feed from the CBC (http://www.cbc.ca) that is updated throughout the day with their top headlines.

How do I use RSS?

To benefit from RSS feeds, you must "subscribe" to them. All you need to subscribe is a "reader" or "aggregator" which compiles all new information from your chosen sites on a single page for easy viewing.

Some Web browsers, including Firefox, include functionality for reading RSS feeds. Please see the Firefox website for more information. Similarly, websites such as iGoogle, myYahoo, Netvibes and Pageflakes provide this functionality online for free so you can access it from any computer.

How do I subscribe to an RSS feed?

Though these instructions vary slightly with different reader/aggregator programs, the general concepts will remain the same.

When the "add new feed" window opens, enter the RSS link you'd like to add into the URL field and click the "Next" or "Ok" button. It may take a second to show up in your reader feed has now been added to your aggregator!
